Never being much of a Skunk Anansie fan I had to be talked into this one (my willpower has the breaking strain of a KitKat where gigs are concerned though, so it didn't take that much to persuade me). I'm glad I went as Skin was bloody good.
She prowled on stage at the beginning, keeping her trademark shaved head covered whilst she belted out two songs from the new album (due to be released early next year). She only realised her mic wasn't turned on properly when she introduced herself (oops); with the mic on she boomed out across the Wedgewood Rooms.
That she was really enjoying herself, evident from the manic grin she sported throughout, brought the gig up several notches. In fact she was having so much fun that, thanks to her radio mic, she went walkabout to the back of the Wedge then, later on, indulged in a bit of crowd surfing (during Take Me On, a song which is, as she herself put it, "another [one] about fudging").
Quite bravely she got Weak out of the way early (about the 4th or 5th track in), performing it in a more laid back style too. She dropped in a couple of Skunk Anansie tracks amongst her solo stuff, the new material sounding very raw and very good. The main set was wrapped up with a cover of Electronic's Getting Away With It, finishing bang on 11. She did a couple of songs for the encore, then bounded offstage, sporting a big grin.
The support, Make Good Your Escape, were damn good too; they hail from Brighton (or thereabouts) and turned in a powerful set. Think Mew + U2 + Muse and you're heading in roughly the right direction, though there's more to them than that. There's a few freebie MP3s on their website, definitely worth a listen.
