So, what's everyone's take on the 'official' England World Cup song? Personally, from the clip I've heard, it sounds like the theme tune to some football-related TV show, with added 'U2 guitar'. OK, but inoffensive and not something that could be sung, chanted or even hummed from a terrace. You can hear a snippet of the tune on the BBC website (well, you can if you're not the wrong side of a proxy server).

You missed off the option of "I've not heard it but its Embrace so is probably faeces anyway"

That's the 4th option.. I did have Footie Manager related quotes picked out for the questions, but they were too long for the space available: ' In terms of the Richter scale this was a force 8 gale' (I love it, back of the net!) ' An inch or two either side of the post and it would have been a goal' (it's OK.. but it's not Three Lions) ' What I said to them at half time would be unprintable on the radio' (it's rubbish! bring back Vindaloo!) ' You must be as strong in March, when the fish are down' (err.. yeah.. it's Embrace so..)

In a possible response to the blandness of the official Embrace tune, 'that bloke from The Darkness' is to release his own terrace-friendly offering (under his British Whale guise). To stir up a bit of controversy the lyrics make reference to the war (I mentioned it once, etc) with a bit of Churchillian rhetoric. Here's a link to the NME.COM news item. If you fancy a listen to the tune then it's streaming on the British Whale MySpace site.

In today's Guardian there's an ad (well, there were several throughout) for an alternative World Cup anthem competition (which begins by saying that the Embrace effort "isn't up to much"). The winner gets their song recorded and released as a downloadable single. So, if you think you can do better, all you've got to do is send them your song's lyrics (and your daytime phone number) via . Entries must reach them by 10am on 08/05/2006.
