After much prevarication I've decided it's high time I got myself some sort of MP3 player (because lugging around a bag full of CDs to play in my aging Walkman just isn't fun any more). The problem is, what do I get? I've always wanted an iPod; they're Mac-tastic and have lean clean lines. But there's the whole iTunes and WMA thing (they look so cool though.. did I mention that already?). Then there's the iRiver, Stu swears by his. I can drag'n'drop my existing files onto it with no need for file conversion or extra software. Unfortunately it has all the grace and styling of a Soviet tractor (not that I'm shallow, umm). Or I could always get something completely different, like the Creative Zen (it's only 5Gb though), one of the funky Philips' players (only 2-3Gb!), or something from Novatech's wide-ish selection. Decisions decisions..

100% vote for IRiver then. Job done I reckon. Ipods seem a tad unreliable to me and if you can drop files without any fudging about then it seems daft to go any other way, glad to see everybody else agrees with me 100%.

by the way - you should have a 'other' box. I've got a mp3 discman which is fab and a couple of mini discs which are pretty good as well. Had one of them there little mp3 player things but it kept going back to the start everytime it was switched on - now that was irritating.

There is no option really- 75% of the worlds' mp3 players are iPods' that tells you some thing. Including why you hear about them going wrong occasionally. iTMS is second only to Amazon in online retail, responsible for 80% of UK music downloads. The competition are dropping out of the market. The unbelievable new iPod nano is 'just so small' (you gotta watch the Steve Jobs' video). Admitedly I am the worlds biggest Mac fan but seriously, is there really an option?

No vote from me I'm afraid... I've got an ipod 20GB (got it for free as a bonus from my company) but i'm not sure if I would buy one... I dont really like the software and the way it needs mp3 tags in your files in order to display the info correctly... the only good thing about the ipod is that there are loads of company making loads of gadgets to go with it and that's quite nice... you could easily make the ipod your home stereo as well with some add-on! Good luck anyway!

I think if I had a Mac (one that isn't 10 years old I mean) my decision would be somewhat easier; I'd get an iPod, end of. As it is I've a PC so I'm leaning more toward the iRiver. I can get the H340 up and running with a minimum of fuss; just plug it in and I'm away. I won't need to recode any of my existing files and it has a radio (sadly lacking from the iPod) which I can also rip MP3s from (like anyone actually does that). Luckily enough the MisticRiver forum has a handy FAQ thread, upon which I found a link to this handy All You Need To Know About The H3xx DAP guide. Of course, knowing me I'll probably change my mind come tomorrow..

I dont really like the software and the way it needs mp3 tags in your files in order to display the info correctly... It's not just DAPs that need correct tags; I've had Audioscrobbler grumble about my tagging (and that's despite ripping using CDex, which downloads media information direct from the CDDB). To effect some sort of standard Audioscrobbler recommends MusicBrainz, an open source metadatabase (ooer); you can download a gizmo from them which will automatically check and label your music files. Groovy.

Admitedly I am the worlds biggest Mac fan but seriously, is there really an option? After playing with iTunes most of the weekend (and really liking it) I have to.. no, there isn't. so yes, I've changed my mind (again) and the iPod will be my next luxury purchase (though I'm gutted they won't engrave it with "fudge fudge fudge budgie budgie bottom" like I wanted them to).

Not that I'm trying to wind anyone up ooh, perish the thought anyway, I finally (!) bit the bullet and put my money where Steve Jobs mouth is (so to speak). I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new iPod. yay! I have to say though, it's a bit of a con that you have to buy the power adaptor seperately, not impressed. oh, and Craig has got his iPod nano. it's quite unbelievably tiny.

yeh well, that's me in a nutshell (cue Austin Powers gag), though the Archos is a nice bit of kit I must admit (I can make Futurama appear on the iPod, though I'll need something like this to do so). Setting up the iPod was a doddle, it pretty much did its thing as soon as it was plugged into the PC, although I did have to run the Updater to sort the onboard software. And there was also an RTFM moment regarding making the album artwork appear, I think I've got that sorted though. PS if you ever wanted to see what's inside an iPod, have a look here.
