Review of Devils Work

Pops cd into cd player... woah, that's a lot of tracks, hope this isn't hard work...

lets get started...

1 - intro, and the third thing on these compilations to have featured on one of my previous efforts!
2 - Sounds like something rowdy teens in an 80's film would listen to. Not a good 80's film though... good god it goes on a bit...
3 - intriging start... quite atmospheric music... ah, horrid voice... shame really, with a good singer i might have liked this more.
4 - eeek, some fiddles! But actually no, more like violins, so that's ok... strange, its like violin-breaks, like incidental music from Millenium, anyone remember that series? I like!
5 - meh, largely indifferent to this... nice guitar solo though.
6 - ditto this, inoffensive, vaguely rockin', as long as a very long thing indeed... eh up, its turned all Mexican-stylee! End bit better than the rest of it.
7 - ah, something i recognise at last! Like these guys, haven't got round to getting this album yet though.
8 - plinky-plonky-girl-singing-dullsville, not particularly attention grabbing.
9 - highly annoying, needs to learn to keep close to the microphone while singing. Best bit about it is the spoken intro about haircuts.
10 - another girl singer, but better than number 8, not bad.
11 - er, pointless intro to...
12 - good grief, banging on about how great God is... bobbins.
13 - always switch these guys off whenever they come on MTV or suchlike... actually pretty good, perhaps i shouldn't be so hasty!
14 - oooh no, this is just wrong... first use of skip.
15 - thought it was a schools programme when it started... something hobbits listen to while on quests for fancy rings, the pervy sods. Folky bobbins. Second use of skip.
16 - Is that a man or a woman singing? I'm afraid i don't like this one either, this cd is going out with something of a whimper...
17 - Is the same person as 16?! sorry no, can't take any more of that!

Well, not many winners for me there, track 4 being the standout, then pretty much downhill from 11 to the end... the Devils work indeed! Sorry Neil!

rawk! I remember sitting in the back of a Renault 5, hurtling from Portchester to Cosham, with this lot blaring out of all speakers. it wasn't this track though. bit rawk, goes on a bit, hasn't aged well.

aha.. I was wondering how far into the compo it would be before himself would make an appearance..

starts nice.. but all I can think of is Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em (even sounds a bit like Michael Crawford singing) hold on, it's gone all a bit funky.. ooer.. oh dear..

is this from an 80's movie soundtrack? sounds like it should be.

I very nearly put this on my compo.. excellent stuff, nice hooky-esque bass drives it along and then it wraps up in a groovy spaghetti western ending..

good to play loud in a fast car.. shame I don't drive really. I've got this lot's first album, this track is new but similar (scarily so in fact).

he's right about the Salon and naff haircuts. I mean, look at Charlotte Church's fella? it looks like he does his hair by shoving his finger in a plug every morning and then spraying gel all over what happens next (I know, it's hypocritical to diss someone else's barnet with one like mine). as for the song, if you can get that angry about shoes then you have a large chip on your shoulder.

this reminds me a little bit of the Cranberries.. but a bit washed-out.

cheeky, you've used this on one your compo's before (not this version though). the spoken word on the previous track doesn't go with this song though, does it?

a torch song for a toilet cleaner? I think he may be on drugs.. and lots of them, all up his nose by the sounds of it. interesting though, kind of grows on you.. yes, I think I like this.. in a Roxy Music sort of way..

same bloke as the track before? h'mm, this reminds me a bit of Sparks.. nice cheery stuff to finish up with, ahem..



all in all a mixed bag of stuff. some I liked, some I didn't, some I already own. interesting, with a cover only marginally less scary than Andy's [shudder]

Track 1. A nice step into the listening environment

Track 2. Lets Rock! ...not my cuppa

Track 3. What the monkey fuzz is that?!!!

Track 4. Good

Track 5. The first bar I thought it was Cagney and Lacey. Good tune though

Track 6. Very good

Track 7. This is a grower

Track 8. Like Dave said.

Track 9. Pretty good stuff

Track 10. Again. Pretty good

Track 11. I know how to get a crowd on my side !!!

Track 12. Thought this was sloth excrement, but listening again it gets better

Track 13. Pretty Cool

Track 14. Well dip my bottom in wax if it's not CRAZY

Track 15. They've had elocution lessions. They do like to Pro - nun - ciate.

Track 16. OK dokeey

Track 17. First part I thought it was Gangster paradise take off. Good tune

Well I'm happy cos again I have expanded my listening repetoire not a bad experience )
